Common Assessment Support Minimize

The Common Assessment Framework (CAF) is a standardised assessment designed to get a complete picture of a child's additional needs at an early stage. It can be used for children and young people of any age, including unborn babies. The CAF enables information to be gathered in a structured way, through discussions with the child and their parents. It looks at all unmet needs and is an approach that helps children get access to the right services earlier.

The CAF is:

  • A common process which enables practitioners to make an assessment and act on the result, using a standard form to record the assessment and where appropriate, share with others
  • It covers all aspects that affect a child's development - health, education and social development through to housing and family relationships
  • CAF is the only assessment that can be used by practitioners in all agencies in England that deliver services to children and young people

The CAF form and pre-assessment checklist can be downloaded below.  The CAF toolkit is also available to download along with example CAFs. For further information on the Common Assessment Framework, please visit the 'Every Child Matters' website .

Update Minimize

Following the successful Common Assessment Framework (CAF) re-launch in South Gloucestershire at the end of April 2010, there has been a 50 % increase in the number of CAF forms completed and action plans initiated. The new process of practitioners taking more responsibility for convening a Team Around the Child / Family meeting (TAC), and coordinating integrated working on the front line appears to be popular. Both practitioners and parents are reporting successful experiences and outcomes which is evident in training and from feedback received.

The full implementation of CAF is being promoted by the Senior Officer Group of the Children’s Trust, and a steering group has been set up to oversee its future development. The steering group will be seeking to establish protocols with all partners that describe the way each agency will use CAF in their own internal processes. More support for practitioners has been developed with the launch of the CAF toolkit

We have also initiated Lead Professional network meetings in each locality four times a year. The first of these meetings have just completed and details of future meetings will be made available from the Common Assessment Support pages of this website.

The CAF training is maintaining a high standard, with very good feedback, and is constantly reviewed to ensure it reflects the latest developments. For further support and information visit the CAF website , e-mail Common Assessment Support or  phone 01454 865734.
