The local safeguarding board replaces the area child protection committee. This statutory board has a remit which covers:

• The protection of children and young people against abuse and neglect
• The national target of safeguarding from preventable injury
• The analysis of child deaths or serious injuries from any cause
• Monitoring, creating and maintaining safe environments for all of our children and young people

The Safer South Gloucestershire Community Safety and Drugs Partnership exists to help improve the safety and well being of individuals and communities throughout South Gloucestershire. Parents and private foster carers are legally required to notify the local authority before a private fostering arrangement begins. The local authority must check that private foster carers are suitable people to do the job and with their permission will carry out checks with people like the police and their GPs. We will also check that the accommodation is safe and suitable.

Professionals in the education, health and social care fields need to help us by ensuring they are proactive in identifying and notifying us of private fostering arrangements that they may become aware of.

If you know a child aged under 16 (or 18 if they are disabled) who is being privately fostered and you think we are unaware of them please encourage the parent or carer to notify us. Statement of Purpose

The Private Fostering Statement of Purpose is a requirement under the National Minimum Standards for Private Fostering. It serves to provide information about the service provided by South Gloucestershire to ensure the safeguarding of children not living with their parents or close relatives.

The South West conference was held on Saturday 21st March 2009 at Bristol Zoo Gardens to provide young people with a 'safe space' to discuss the issues surrounding terrorism and preventing violent extremism. The event was organised by a regional steering group that was formed following a UK Youth Parliament regional meeting in August 2008, with follow up planning sessions occurring over the next seven month period, in the run up to the event. It is intended that this report presents the findings of the South West region as well as to provide further information including the planning stages, problems encountered during this process and all relevant information surrounding the event itself.
