When to include children and young people in the Recruitment and Selection process? Minimize

AT ANY STAGE!

image of young person walking happilyThe Recruitment and Selection process consists of several stages where children and young people could have the opportunity to become involved.

- Creation of Job Description/Job Summary/Additional Job Information
- Shortlisting
- Interview Panels (can be seperate panels for young people)
- Group Exercises
- Role Play
- Decision Making

Traditionally within some areas of South Gloucestershire (particularly Children's Social Services & Youth Services), young people have been included on many Interview panels - but there are opportunities to get involved before that stage.  For posts groups 1 & 2 below Children & Young People should be involved as part of the Interview panel.  Please consider whether children and young people could be more involved in the process e.g. preparing a job description and/or short listing.

1.  Those posts that involve working directly with Children & Young People or for Senior positions across the department.

2.  Those posts that do not involve working directly with Children & Young People, but offer services and make decisions that affect and influence the lives of Children & Young People.

3.  Those support posts that have responsibility for managing resources (e.g. Finance/IT).

For all posts that Children & Young People are involved in the process they should be given equal opportunity to express their views, including during decision making on who will be offered employment.  In the event of any differences in opinion between Children & Young People and other panel members it is important to ensure a discussion takes places with a clear explanation on why another decision may have to be made.
